    The strategy in current market

Pure directional bet seems to be risky. Bull can be hurt by timing, and bear can be hurt by long term turnaround. I suggest convergence trading strategy. Find good pairs in financial, retailing, service, conglomerates and technology sectors.

And look into their fundamental details first.

    RIMM down

the call makes sense. for RIMM, the war has just begun. for AAPL, as long as it
can't create a market of its own, the high expectation would fall
short. given AMD and INTC case, i would be bearish on AAPL and RIMM
since i think the speculation is a little out of bound.

    anyway, remember to be swift.

    RIMM

hardly remember my last event driven bet. RIMM seems God blessed in recent years. So what is going to happen next Wed? Shall I use some convergence strategy or long some straddle to rely on volatility? No, no complication in any means.

I would bet it's going down. Maybe it would be up after conference call next Wed, but wouldn't be much given its current price and current macro-environment. But, but if it goes down, that would be huge, most likely 30%+. It's about fundamentals, but not all about fundamentals and not all the time. There is big short pressure for this stock. I like blackberries but I could short RIMM at the same time.

    Let's wait and see.

    There will be blood 2007

    Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

A real masterpiece。

    The Shawshank Redemption 1994

    Director: Frank Darabont

    Terminator II 1991

    Director: James Cameron

    Wall Street 1987

    Director: Oliver Stone

    Gordon Gekko's speech on Greed.

    Some excerpt:

"... The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.

    Greed is right.

    Greed works.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed -- you mark my words -- will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

    Silent, Silent Night

    Silent, Silent Night
    by William Blake.

    Silent, silent night,
    Quench the holy light
    Of thy torches bright;

    For possessed of Day
    Thousand spirits stray
    That sweet joys betray.

    Why should joys be sweet
    Used with deceit,
    Nor with sorrows meet?

    But an honest joy
    Does itself destroy
    For a harlot coy.

    弦高

    出自“淮南子-人间训”,现在大多只引用前半部褒扬其人机智,但其实原作本意在于后面的弦高辞赏。其中包含的法的本质引人思考。

    秦穆公使孟盟举兵袭郑。过周以东。郑之贾人弦高、蹇他相与谋曰:“师行 数千里,数绝诸侯之地,其势必袭郑。凡袭国者,以为无备也。今示以知其情, 必不敢进。”乃矫郑伯之命,以十二牛劳之。三率相与谋曰:“凡袭人者,以为 弗知。今已知之矣。守备必固,进必无功。”乃还师而反。晋先轸举兵击之,大 破之殽。郑伯乃以存国之功赏弦高,弦高辞之曰:“诞而得赏,则郑国之信废矣。 为国而无信,是俗败也,赏一人而败国俗,仁者弗为也。以不信得厚赏,义者弗 为也。”遂以其属徙东夷,终身不反。

    今天读一篇Robert Aumann的采访,提到了在Yale的一次讨论,他问大家能不能用一个词概括经济学,Jim Tobin说有,这个词就是incentives。我想翻译成中文就是"利",所谓“天下熙熙,皆為利來;天下攘攘,皆為利往”。

    PS:Game theory是个很有意思的东西,有时间应该写点这方面的感想。

    Film - The Kite Runner

    从电影来看,Khaled Hosseini的小说应该是一部史诗性的,能够展现像百年孤独,静静的顿河一样的宁静下的波澜壮阔。不过电影感觉很匆忙,场景虽然表现的很干净,但整个节奏缺少一种镇定从容。

     哪儿不一样呢!秦二爷,常四爷,我跟你们不一样;二爷财大业大心胸大,树大可就招风啊!四爷你,一辈子不服软,敢做敢当,专打抱不平。我呢,做了一辈子顺民,见谁都请安、鞠躬、作揖。我只盼着呀,孩子们有出息,冻不着,饿不着,没灾没病!可是,日本人在这儿,二拴子逃跑啦,老婆想儿子想死啦!好容易,日本人走啦,该缓一口气了吧?谁知道,(惨笑)哈哈,哈哈,哈哈!
    常四爷 我也不比你强啊!自食其力,凭良心干了一辈子啊,我一事无成!七十多了,只落得卖花生米!个人算什么呢,我盼哪,盼哪,只盼国家像个样儿,不受外国人欺侮。可是……哈哈!
    秦仲义 日本人在这儿,说什么合作,把我的工厂就合作过去了。咱们的政府回来了,工厂也不怎么又变成了逆产。仓库里(指后边)有多少货呀,全完!哈哈!
    王利发 改良,我老没忘了改良,总不肯落在人家后头。卖茶不行啊,开公寓。公寓没啦,添评书!评书也不叫座儿呀,好,不怕丢人,想添女招待!人总得活着吧?我变尽了方法,不过是为活下去!是呀,该贿赂的,我就递包袱。我可没做过缺德的事,伤天害理的事,为什么就不叫我活着呢?我得罪了谁?谁?皇上、娘娘那些狗男女都活得有滋有味的,单不许我吃窝窝头,谁出的主意?
    常四爷 盼哪,盼哪,只盼谁都讲理,谁也不欺侮谁!可是,眼看着老朋友们一个个的不是饿死,就是叫人家杀了,我呀就是有眼泪也流不出来喽!松二爷,我的朋友,饿死啦,连棺材还是我给他化缘化来的!他还有我这么个朋友,给他化了一口四块板的棺材;我自己呢?我爱咱们的国呀,可是谁爱我呢?看,(从筐中拿出些纸钱)遇见出殡的,我就捡几张纸钱。没有寿衣,没有棺材,我只好给自己预备下点纸钱吧,哈哈,哈哈!

Film Review - There will be blood

A boring, mediocre movie at first sight. But the great performance by Daniel Day Lewis impresses. It reminds me of "A river runs through it". Both stories are quiet, common, but you can just feel there is something extraordinary underneath. This is what you can always find in a good movie.

Film Review - The Assasination of Jessie James

The assasination of jessie james不错,虽然称不上伟大。

A river runs through it里面的桀骜的Paul MacLean,而缺乏James应有的沉稳,矛盾的性格特征,当然随着年龄的增长,这方面已经改进了很多。

    On Randomness

    On Randomness

    RNG

We start from RNG (random number generator), which can be seen in almost every utility program today. It’s like the representative we employ in computer systems to shows our awe to the powerful reality. And by a better designed RNG, we hope we would be able to predict God’s next move.

I’ve been TA for simulation course for several times and RNG is always a core part in simulation programming. There are dozens of algorithms for random sequence generation, starting from simplest LCG (linear congruential generator) to “unpredictable” trapdoor function. Correspondingly there are dozens of back-test methods to ensure the sequence we generate looks random as well as normative.

But the problem is if the volume of memory is limited, the computer, theoretically, is just a FSM (finite-state machine). Then there is no way to generate a truly random sequence by such a deterministic system. Randomness should be totally memoryless and independent. What we are trying to do is just to make the generated repetitive sequence as long, chaotic, as possible. Anyway, what you need is what you should generate. So I always told the students, the best way is to know the simulation systems, to feed them what they want. That’s why in most cases, LCG is fine enough.

I further go on thinking about where RNG can be improved. Can we break repetitiveness? Yes. Think about the irrational number, square root of 2.

We know it can be approximated by Taylor’s series to any precision as we like. And the coefficients in Taylor’s series regular which means we can express them by finite information.

But you can’t rush to your boss and tell him you just discover a true RNG. Since if your boss is stupid enough to believe you and use your algorithm for some highly confidential data, it would take long to be cracked. The problem is non-repetitiveness is far from randomness. So can all irrational numbers be generated with finite information? That’s a little beyond this article’s scope. Let’s put it aside. The conclusion now is we can’t make a true RNG by computer. Maybe someday, and the day we achieve this, is the day we solve Turing test.

But that’s not the end of the story. Randomness is still like a buzzword to me. I don’t like buzzwords.

    What’s Randomness Anyway?

Random, by Webster, means “relating to, having, or being elements or events with definite probability of occurrence”.

This definition should be familiar since that’s what we are taught in probability course. In my view, randomness, belongs to topology more than to pure numbers (of course you can say all mathematics can be cracked down to number theory). It not only is some gift from observation, but also has been widely applied in practices. The jump from deterministic number to functional can bring many unexpected and surprising benefit.

History repeats but never in the same way. Paul Samuelson once nicely put it in this way: we have only one sample of history. We are living in a world we don’t know completely. Even someone declares the world is deterministic, it’s more philosophical instead of “scientific”. But we desperately want to know the world since we are clear about the pay-off of predictability. Unpredictability and predictability, are like twins.

Randomness is our solution. More specifically, we use probability theory to get ourselves some clue. We “price” unpredictability by measures such as Sharpe ratio. We make ourselves a cozy home in the dark cold universe.

But if you pay a little attention to the definition, you can see a word “definite”. How come a definite thing in definition of a certainly indefinite thing?

Look back the way probability theory goes. It starts with gambling and now, has expanded to every area. But some basic principles haven’t changed. It needs preassumed distributions like Gaussian, to generate the whole topological structure, and needs some mapping rules like VaR, to help our decision. Both are strong assumptions and “definite”.

We get those definite things from data. But recent study is questioning both (for example, see Kahneman, Tversky, Mandelbrot’s writings). In my point of view, this is good but still wrong in direction.

Harold Hardy once said compared to physics, mathematics seems more “real” to him. Absolutely right. Given the randomness theory, itself forms a complete and beautiful system. Just like given gravity and other basic rules, we have our real world. In probability universe, we have rules like optimality, equilibrium, etc. Every entity can enter the universe but if it doesn’t show respect to the game rule, it’s going to be eliminated theoretically. To be specific, this is called arbitrage opportunity in finance.

But as Samuelson said, we can’t believe a model simply because it’s beautiful. Does randomness serve its purpose?

    Why We Need Randomness?

We need randomness to make a better understanding of the real world, like Milton Friedman said, “prescribe what should be done in the light of what has been done”. Is the beautiful randomness really helpful in our reality?

Assume you are gambling with an idiot. You two pick 0 or 1 each time. And rule is as follows: If you two pick the same number, nothings happens. Otherwise, the 1 guy wins a million. Obviously, in this zero-sum matrix game, only one Nash equilibrium exists: 1-1.

But what if that idiot keeps picking 0? Are you going to be lured by the million reward? In other words, do you have confidence to tell determinacy by past data?

This simple example shows the gap between theoretical and real worlds. The strong assumptions and lack of details specifications make the theory hard and dangerous to apply. What if everyone truly regards the world as random? Is this going to lead to a limit or a never-converged distribution? Is the whole system resulted robust to its rules? By continuing such discussions, you would find it goes more and more theoretical and useless.

As John Milnor said about Nash’s work on game theory: “However, when mathematics is applied to other branches of human knowledge, we must really ask a quite different question: To what extent does the new work increase our understanding of the real world? On this basis, Nash's thesis was nothing short of revolutionary.” From this angle, probability theory is only a limited, micro-level theory. It sets up a set of rules about how people should play the game but doesn’t explain. What we are doing is to prove the completeness of the universe and seek black holes, etc.

In conclusion, there is no such thing called “randomness” in this world. What we face are only known and unknown.

    Unknown is Unmeasurable

Randomness is still deterministic. It’s just a tool we use to treat the unpredictable world. Given circumstances, given uses, it’s useful. If people are stuck in it, they may lose the chance to realize the real world.

Unknown is unmeasurable. We have no idea what it is. Sure we can’t handle this kind of stuff. That’s why we turn to things like probability theory. We need to know the prior knowledge, the time, the frequency, the sample size, the utility, et al. But you can’t say a 99.9% VaR portfolio is secure since you don’t know how the system runs. We are dusts in a dessert and we need to see the big picture.

    Think Big

My probability theory is poor and only limited to certain areas like finance. The learning of probability theory did improve my realization of the world. But the trading experience tells me to be a non-believer, i.e., probability theory is merely part of the tools we human being has invented along our history.

For financial world, I want to model it as a dynamical system. However, the complexity, theoretically, is beyond my current capacity and I also don’t have enough resources to practise my theory now. Anyway, I can use some intuitive and straight ways to experiment in small scale. Though they seem not so mathematically beautiful and even hard to express by words, they are better than orthodox finance engineering stuff because they are “big”.

Yes, think big and think different. We are not what we are taught but certainly we are what we think.

    Some beautiful lines

    The Road Not Taken
    -Robert Frost

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

    Two fabulous books

Irrational Exuberance by Robert Shiller and SYNC by Steven Strogatz.

First book is a best seller. It's sort of pop reading with economics research methodology.
Though it doesn't provide any obvious solution or strategy, I view it as a bed for thoughts.

Second book is aiming at introducing some hard science topic in plain words. Dynamical systems is hot and promising. Knowing what those guys have done and are going to do would be funny.

    Den of Thieves

Wall Street doesn't generate money only, a source of stories as well.

I would recommend the later part, though the author seems having trouble to cover the whole scope, it's a nice demonstration of Prisoner's dilemma.

    Irrational Exuberance

Players in china stock market should read this book as reference. It includes the right attitude and useful methodology. What's more, it provides historical data from US stock market which is lacked for the too young china stock market.

Here are three simple principles to remember: don't follow mass (think the opposite instead most of the time), check history and always use data to verify your point of view if possible.

[1] Irrational exuberance by Robert Shiller, 2nd ed, 2005, Princeton University Press.

    Get yourself hedged

    Short AAPL

Let's test my intuition. A god-blessed stock may lose its momentum in the next couple weeks.

    Play the fat tail

Trading is like gambling. Bet on those where one win can erase 99 losses but not the opposite. However, be swift. If mass recover, they recover in flood.

    [1]: Ratatouille

    Fooled by randomness

by Nassim Taleb. A book with many observations and true experiences from author. Though not consistent and not with a unified organization, it's a book worthy of reading. At least, the author thinks deep.

    Subprime

It's not 98', not 02'. Subprime crisis is not a pleasant topic but certainly can be solved by personal investments, not by government policy. Investors know what they buy is something real, something is going to pay-off, not deteriorating Asian currencies, not Internet bubbles. But they are just cunning. They would hold on fire until they feel the bottom, i.e., when they can maximize benefit from the crisis.

The only problem is how they do the timing and whether a catalyst is needed. That's the point of interest rate decrease. More psychology, less so-called economics.

    Baby of the Week

Of course TBSI, on which I earn 20%+ in two days.

In stock market, a portfolio should have large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap.

Large-cap is with less volatility and especially, judging from its cyclic property, you would know good buy-sell timing.

Mid-cap is main component of the market. With higher returns and volatility, it would best for some middle-term plays. And also, you could bet on some events.

Small-cap is like pearl picking. You could find some great future stars here with fabulous P/E/G like TBSI. Just be cautious about the risk. Since small-cap once goes down, it probably wouldn't come back.

    Pricing of American Put

A fluid mechanics guy used a so-called "homotopy analysis" method to challenge the open problem - American put pricing - in a different way.

This is a refreshing methodology though the proof in the Quantitative Finance paper is not so rigorous. That reminds me of Fourier's story.

However, this result may not be so ground breaking as BSM. First, it lacks explicit economic meaning which is a must-have to excite financial economists. Second, instead of putting much effort in this direction, we should put more focus on making the theoretical model more realistic. That, needs more explorers, not only diggers.

Anyway, all ways lead to Rome. For this idea, it's good to think the problem different. It should be appreciated.

AI back to fundamentals. Not skills about divide and conquer.

I don't expect business success of Numenta but it would be a good experiment. People begin to realize intelligence is not compression but injection in digital form of our incompressible real world.

Yet much to explore, however, that makes a funny topic.

    Cash Curve

Reading "Payback" by James P. Andrew and Harold L. Sirkin.

The pivotal idea in the book is cash curve. A powerful visual tool to help you get a clue where your innovation possibly would go. The methodology looks like some business art at first look.

If that's really the case, it's just beautiful yet useless.

Something is universally true is also something universally useless. Throughout the book, it struggles between a philosophy and a statistic. If a philosophy, it would retain beauty but lose practical meaning; if a statistic, it would become ugly and make reader confused.

Simplicity is beauty. But it has to go through the reverse process to become something useful. For cash curve, it does bring fresh air. But only guys knowing how to breathe well would stand out.

    Visualize your idea

"A picture is worth one thousand words."

This famous saying tells a fact yet make no explanation.

The actual philosophy behind it is the human instinct. It's no doubt in the long evolution history, we have developed strong natural feelings. Among all, vision is supposed to be the strongest. Even today, the ability to extract information from a scene remains a mystery and beauty.

To visualize is to utilize our strongest weapon. Even an outsider, could find thousands of clues in a picture. So the hurdle has been given back to the author.

Yes, the questions could be stupid after interpretation. But posterior stupid. The questions could be limited. But new territories are opened up as well.

WYSWYG, as long as we are still the human being as today, remains true.

    A Perspective

"Strategic and Natural Competition" by Bruce D. Henderson. Available at:
    http://www.bcg.com/publications/files/Eng231-StrategicandNatur.pdf

This is a fabulous article because every piece of word is incompressible. No nonsense words, no emotional judgments, no simple restatement of facts. Only necessary facts, right way to interpret and far-reaching insights.

Henderson has authored some great perspectives which, obviously, have gone through "relentless self-editing". However, other perspectives are shy of excellence.

An excerpt from "Tearing down the walls"

Said to be part of one of Sandy Weill's presentation:

    Six keys to success:

    1) Employee ownership
    2) Quality balance sheet
    3) Recurring and predictable earnings
    4) Diverse products and distribution
    5) Leader in every business
    6) Powerful brand

1 is usually implemented by employee's stock or option ownerships. 2 is mostly represented by Weill's cost cutting skills. 3 means low risky businesses. 4 includes cross-selling and other strategies. 5 is done by super-demanding evaluation criteria on employees. 6 is certainly achieved if all previous are accomplished.

    Corporate Culture

Corporate culture is nonsense, only meaningful to media or so-called researchers in this topic. Anyone wouldn't get reformed by simply getting contact with some corporate culture. He/she would grow slowly or fast, but in both cases, only by empirical working experiences.

Any concept is some kind of summary. It sure has reason for its existence. However, as the origin where the corporate culture rises, it would be absolutely ridiculous for a company to take that concept as some cure-all.

    Murphy's Irish Stout

Less bitter than Guinness and less creamy than ale. Maybe not served at best temperature.

    Two books

Recently read two books about Sandy Weill and Citigroup.

"Tearing down the walls" - A well written story by a WSJ writer. The characters are vivid. However, many things are overemphasized. Sandy Weill seems to be the only one under the spotlight in this book.

"King of capital" - With more finance logic and more objectiveness, but less readability.

The two should be good companions with Graham's "The Intelligent Investor".

    Time to be a cowboy

The future is uncertain now and rumors are everywhere. It would be a good time to practice your timing skills. Be a cowboy and enjoy the bull riding.

    China's Private Equity Mkt

Time to read "The Intelligent Investor" instead of "Jim Cramer's Real Money". Both are outstanding books due to the authors' deep understandings about stock markets, just different focuses.

Resources related industries like real estate are just first step in reform. Private equity market would be the next and also a signal of a more mature market. It's something which can fundamentally change the structure.

Of course, current uncertain and unregulated China's private equity market would see more bystanders instead of explorers. Some forerunners' wrongdoings only deepen people's misunderstanding on this change. But there is going be the first and that day isn't far away. No need in a rush but stay in the game.

    Renzo Piano Works II

    Tjibaou Cultural Centre

    Renzo Piano Works I

    Georges Pompidou National Centre

the topic itself seems to be a symmetric pair. a Russell paradox?

longtime i wonder what is art and how it has some magical power on human. another area i am interested in is architecture. previously i prefer Gaudi, but later, as aging, i turn to Renzo Piano who seems more engineering style.

the first thing to clarify is the concept of symmetry and asymmetry. by symmetry, we are not meaning the traditional mirror or simple 2-D transitions. it has more broad meaning to incorporate such as fractal or some drawings like the one on the cover of book "design patterns", etc.

in one words, symmetry means some form which can be compressed into highly concise information. while asymmetry is the opposite.

the world prefers symmetry not because the God likes it. it adopts mostly because such form is most suitable for the world to explode. by the same rule, something can evolve into a small grass or a skyscrape tree.

asymmetry is the opposite. it appears not because the God wants the world more colorful. it's unsteady, rich of information, energetic. just as the simple symmetric rule lying in the heart of universe, there is some asymmetric power existing at the same time.

everything is similar, but not exactly the same.

the combination and undividedness of symmetry and asymmetry is easy to explain, just like even with 0,1, we can form rational and irrational numbers at the same time. the world could be simple and complex, depending on how you look at it.

people are trying to decode asymmetry, in the small, by some research topics like PR, IR, signal processing, in the large, all areas like math. however, the basic problem is our logic world is built on some strictly symmetric blocks, it's impossible for us to simulation the real world even it seems we can imagine very asymmetric things.

in one words, our "asymmetry" is based on recording history and non-repeat. and in real world, asymmetry is real asymmetry, sort of distributed.

currently the only asymmetry we can generate is by borrowing seeds from real world and put them through our symmetric tunnels.

to get out of this dilemma, the first thing to do is to break traditional binary logic which is the foundation of modern AI. this is the heart of the universe and makes the game less funny.

another possible place to change is to make the whole system more distributed and autonomous.

i will come back to this topic later.

    Apple

What happened in the recent one month seems to prove the efficient market theory. After rallying to near $100 due to the release of iPhone and iTV at Macworld, AAPL now has fallen back to $85. Efficient market curse appears, even on this American brand.

Although all analysts are bullish on it, the unsure near-term prospect still attracts many bets on its down side. Even we are expecting a "short squeeze", such hope is quite airy.

Confidence should come from fundamental but not technical reasons.

The release of iTV in Feb could be a short-term catalyst for another round of rally. iPhone is still too far to give the stock a solid support while iTV could prove something. Apple is strong because of its brand power. It's the only player in its own market. That's why even everyone feels iPod's price is far out of the way, it still works quite fine. If iTV or iPhone could continue the tradition, bear would be blown away in no time.

One big difference between Apple and other giants like Google, Cisco, is Apple doesn't make acquisitions throughout its development. This, in one hand, reinforces its unique role in the market, and in the other hand, becomes part of Apple Philosophy which many doubt won't last for long. Looking back, we may find some similarities and dissimilarities. Apple was not a forerunner in mp3 player area either and it directly entered the high-end market. However, mobile equipment seems more mature than mp3 player right now, and it's really hard this time to create a private "Apple market".

The mobile phone competition is very keen and one weapon Apple could rely on is still its iPod stuff. And the problem is, if can't make big difference, iPhone creates a direct competition with the old money generator: iPod. From this angle, iTV might be a real potential star rather than iPhone.

After long waited iPhone and iTV, Apple may not rush into another innovation before new guys get proven in market. However, this time, the acceptance from market may not come naturally. And I just wonder whether $85 includes this.

Apple is a fantastic brand that few doubt. But don't forget it was once leader at the beginning of IT era and was a great brand since then. And it just turned around from the bottom by successful combination blows in recent years. For those iPhone zealots, they believe history repeats. However, we don't know how long the period is.

    China stocks

A fund manager wouldn't care much about the high volatility of china stocks when their prices are super low. But when they rise too much, it would come into play.

If the market is efficient, would be hard to predict; however, regulations or human behaviors are easier to hack. Just need experience to make a good timing.

    ----Anonymous

"I think there is a world market for about five computers"

    --Thomas J. Watson

"640K ought to be enough for anybody"

    --Bill Gates

Agent Smith?

Webster里面Prediction(当然有很多词有预言的含义,without loss of generality,这里只选择一个有代表性的)的定义是“a declaration that something will happen in the future”,这也是我们所熟悉的定义,然而如果更进一步呢?

    About GOTO

goto,日语对应“后藤”, may be the most "notorious" instruction in the computer language because of Dijkstra's criticism on its use. but somehow, people are enjoying arguing about this which really makes the topic become a trivial technical trick. as Dijkstra said: "Please don't fall into the trap of believing that I am terribly dogmatical about [the goto statement]. I have the uncomfortable feeling that others are making a religion out of it, as if the conceptual problems of programming could be solved by a single trick, by a simple form of coding discipline!" from his words, his intention may be lost.

i misunderstood too at the beginning. but thanks to [2], whose author is close to the origin of the debate and familiar with the whole progress of such an idea, gives me another chance to think a little deeper on this problem and get something really helpful.

a program is actually a tree structure. expanded and circulated. but too many artificial variables are created which are just beds for bugs. think about your bugs, i guess most of them are due to deadlock in recursive statements. as Dijkstra said, why we need to add another dimension?

this is just an ideal for the abstraction of high-level language as Dijkstra said. as high-level language, the goto is really somewhat weired. this can also be regarded as the origin of OOP, i.e., an object should have its property and specific operations.

I guess this is what Dijkstra wants to say. but maybe the misunderstanding will last for long.

    OTM and Doubling Strategies

Option trading is more interesting than stock trading since it possesses some its own properties. Of course, liquidation risk a problem, but long term, who cares that. I would talk a little about OTM strategy today.

    1. OTM Philosophy:

Option is more volatile and risky. But this is to say under the assumption that we invest same amount of money. What if we look at the following case. Stock A we buy 1,000 share at price $20. Within 3 months, we expect it to move between 18-22. Then you expected result is -2,000 - +2,000. Let's do this by another way. We buy 20 contracts call options with strike price 21 at $0.1 each. This costs $2,000. So your expected result now is -2,000 - +20,000.

Yes, this is too weak a case to show some dominance. We can attack from many angles such as "you can't find so cheap OTM options if that information is priced in, you can't do this without consideration of operational risk which might lift the price much, it should be more prone to go down if OTM is so cheap, etc".

For small investors, I hardly believe so called statistics would take effect. We are betting anyway and most of the time, worse case analysis is more proper. However, portfolio holding or long-term investment do give us some confidence in using econometric methods. But this seems prohibitive considering quite limited budget.

    OTM gives you hope.

Doubling strategies, which were adopted by Leeson at Barings Bank, can be used as a demonstration. By using the same policy, OTM can achieve the same P/L as betting on stocks. Moreover, OTM distribution is asymmetric and often fat tailed. I would say it's even a better bed for doubling strategy than real-meaning stocks and also this is what Leeson actually did. For academics, you can refer to Shreve's example.

So now you can use portfolio analysis and numerous econometric methods. Essential but still superficial. Since it doesn't answer one question: Where are you finding these OTMs?

    2. OTM Pick:

    Several experiences to share.

    1) Pick one which is OTM due to macro- but NOT individual factors:

Like some retailing brand goes down because of macro factors like the warm winter causes the sales down in holiday season. Since all other go down as well, it's still yet not enough to say it loses its advantage. And are you expecting this seasonal effect or abnormality to last? Even abnormality does last, given a better company, it should adjust better than others. However, if a company is down due to individual reasons, it's a little risky. Like USG, it has been around $55 for a long time. Only catalyst during this period is Buffett's stake raise. This helped a short wave and faded quickly. Anyway, 99% are not Buffett and not passive fund managers.

    2) Watch out time decaying:

Even you are lucky (at least you should think so yourself) to find some candidates. Don't rush into them before you make some investigation. You have to know how much time it may take to turn you OTM into God-blessed treasury. Don't overlook time decaying effect even you are not rejecting short-term play. And of course, if you are more academic, you can do periodic review and form some first or second order hedge portfolios.

    3. Some Principles:

Though I am not a principle believer, seemingly it indeed has some psychological effect.

    1) Asset allocation:

Let's say we make following allocation: 50% as reserve, left assigned 10-20% to each bet. So if you have $20,000. Then you can reserve $10,000 and make 10 bets, each with $1,000.

To keep reserve is to capture new opportunities when appeared. To assigned small proportion to each bet is to assure you are not absorbed by zero state too soon.

    2) Early Bird:

Historical data shows overreaction often appears at heavy volume moments. And so does OTMs. So to find good candidates, keep an eye on news and a regular watch list.
